Relocating to Huntsville, AL From Colorado Springs: What to Know
Compare housing, employment, weather, commuting and everyday costs before moving from Colorado Springs to Huntsville, Alabama.
Relocating to Huntsville, AL from Colorado Springs
Relocating to Huntsville, AL from Colorado Springs involves more than comparing home prices. Housing may give you room to explore a different budget, but summer humidity, workplace access, taxes and daily driving can have just as much influence on where you choose to live.
I’m Justin Forehand with eXp Realty. I help people relocating to Huntsville and Madison build a move plan around their work location, budget and priorities. Here are the main differences and practical details to consider.
Compare actual homes, not just citywide prices
Redfin reported a median sale price of $459,696 in Colorado Springs and $339,775 in Huntsville for the three months ending August 2026. That is a difference of $119,921, or 26.1% of the Colorado Springs figure.
That difference may create more flexibility in your home search, but a median is only the middle sale. It does not mean you will find the same floor plan, condition, yard or location for 26.1% less.
Compare available homes using the same requirements, including:
- Total purchase price and estimated monthly payment
- Home condition and maintenance needs
- Yard size and features
- HOA charges and terms
- Property-specific taxes and insurance
- Builder incentive conditions for new construction
- Drive time to work and regular destinations
Established homes and new construction should be evaluated on their total cost and fit, not just the advertised price.
City scale and economic connections
Colorado Springs is a little more than twice Huntsville’s size based on Census city estimates, although the surrounding metro areas are much closer in size. Huntsville’s metro added about 2.6% from 2024 to 2025, compared with about 0.6% for Colorado Springs.
Growth can support additional services and housing, but it can also mean construction and busier roads. You may hear a different Huntsville population locally: the Huntsville Planning Department estimated 249,102. That is separate from the Census figure used in the city comparison.
The two cities also share strong military and aerospace ties. Colorado Springs includes Fort Carson, Peterson, Schriever and the Air Force Academy. Huntsville includes Redstone Arsenal, NASA Marshall, the FBI and defense contractors. Toyota Alabama and Mazda Toyota Manufacturing add an automotive manufacturing presence.
Experience in engineering, cybersecurity, program management or military work may translate between the markets. However, a written offer and the specific position matter more than either city’s general reputation. Contract funding, federal decisions, benefits and household employment needs should all be part of the plan.
U.S. Space Command also creates a direct connection. Personnel from its intelligence directorate moved to Redstone on April 15, 2026, and the command marked operational control of its first dedicated facility on April 29. Because this is a phased move, confirm your reporting location and dates before building a home-buying timeline around it.
Build a complete Huntsville budget
The Bureau of Economic Analysis placed Colorado Springs at 100.707 and Huntsville at 93.072 on its 2024 regional price index, where the national price level equals 100. On that measure, Huntsville was about 7.6% lower overall.
That does not mean every bill will fall by 7.6%. Housing rent differences were much larger than differences in the goods category, and your results depend on the home you select and how you spend.
Census data from the same survey period showed lower median gross rent and lower median household income in Huntsville. These are separate citywide medians, not the finances of one household. If you plan to rent first, use current rental quotes. Remote workers should also ask whether changing locations affects compensation.
Taxes require a more detailed comparison. The typical combined general sales tax was 8.2% in Colorado Springs and 9% in Huntsville, although certain purchases and special districts may follow different rules. Alabama has state income tax brackets from 2% to 5%, while Colorado’s base rate was 4.4%. Because the taxable-income calculations differ, the headline rates alone do not show which household will pay less.
For every home under consideration, include:
- A property-specific tax estimate
- A current homeowners insurance quote
- HOA charges
- Utilities
- Maintenance
- Transportation costs
If you move during the tax year, ask a tax preparer about part-year residency and any applicable military rules.
Prepare for a different climate and landscape
Colorado Springs has a high-elevation setting and views associated with the Front Range. Huntsville is lower, greener and more wooded, with Appalachian foothills, rolling terrain and the Tennessee River Valley. Outdoor recreation is still available, but the experience shifts from high-alpine terrain to wooded trails and water.
Huntsville’s summer nights can be a significant adjustment. A typical July low is about 71 degrees in Huntsville, compared with 58 in Colorado Springs. Huntsville also receives more than three times as much annual precipitation. Humidity makes summer feel different even when daytime temperatures appear similar.
Winters are milder, and average snowfall is much lower. Snow and ice can still cause disruption, so a low annual average should not be treated as zero winter weather.
When evaluating a home, consider:
- Air-conditioning performance
- Shade around the home and yard
- Drainage and moisture conditions
- Weather alert options
- A designated severe-weather shelter location
- Maintenance needs associated with the local climate
North Alabama has a documented tornado history. Set up reliable alerts and decide where you will shelter before severe weather arrives.
Test your commute before choosing an area
The Census average commute is a little shorter in Huntsville, but a regional average cannot predict your drive. Start with the exact workplace, then test the route during the hours you expect to travel.
For Redstone Arsenal, identify the gate you can use and review its access rules. A route that looks short on a map may work differently depending on the gate, time and traffic pattern.
Potential search starting points include:
- Research Park and MidCity for west Huntsville or Madison searches
- Central options for downtown or medical-district employment
- West-side and Limestone County routes for a Mazda Toyota job
These are tour starting points, not exclusive recommendations. Also test drives to errands, appointments and regular activities during a normal weekday.
For trips back west, Huntsville International Airport currently lists nonstop Denver service through United. Verify schedules for your travel dates. Huntsville is in Central Time, one hour ahead of Colorado Springs.
Confirm address-based logistics
A mailing address does not answer every location question. Huntsville City, Madison City and Madison County operate separate school systems. A Madison mailing address by itself does not establish Madison City Schools eligibility.
Use official address tools, then confirm enrollment and assignments directly with the applicable district. Evaluate the specific programs needed rather than relying on a general city ranking.
You may also want to check childcare availability, medical insurance networks and travel times to recurring activities before selecting a home.
Recreation and the honest tradeoffs
Monte Sano offers wooded hiking, while local river access provides another way to spend time outdoors. Lowe Mill hosts arts and events, Stovehouse offers food and live entertainment, and The Orion has a concert calendar.
If skiing and high-alpine weekends are central to your routine, leaving the Front Range is a meaningful tradeoff. A scouting visit should reflect an ordinary week rather than only a vacation itinerary.
Huntsville may make sense when the employment opportunity, complete budget and daily logistics line up. The decision should be based on your real routine—not one ranking or one home-price statistic.
